Year 4, 5 and 6 had the amazing opportunity to travel back in time with the help of VR technology. They put on headsets and were immediately transported to a different era: year 4 and 5 went back to Ancient Rome and Year 6 experienced island life in Ancient Greece. Not only did it help us to discover new things about these periods in history, we also got to consider how new technologies can support our learning.
Have a look at some of our photos! We have had a tremendous start to the new term. To launch our English text, The Day the Crayons Quit, the children had to become detectives and follow a series of clues to find Miss Bullard who had been kidnapped by angry crayons!
In PSHE, we have been following a unit produced by SCIB (Safeguarding Children in Banbury) on substance misuse. The first lesson was on our neurological early warning systems and emotions - this was an excellent opportunity for the children to use drama to investigate these themes though mini scenario based plays. In maths, last terms hard work on place value appears to be paying off, we have moved onto formal column addition and the children have risen to the challenge with the help of manipulatives. Watch this space for some parent friendly videos to support homework. In Year 2, we were shocked to discover that our classroom had been vandalised by some grumpy and upset crayons because we had not been treating our crayons and colouring pencils nicely and with respect. They even transformed our teachers into CRAYONS!!!!
After we read the book 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Oliver Jeffers, we then understood why our crayons in Year 2 might be feeling upset as well. We had to promise our crayons to take better care of them, we hope that they will believe us and not create chaos in our classroom again! Over the next week we will continue to explore the book and let it inspire us to write our own apology letters to our colouring pencils and crayons. Fledglings were surprised to find a jigsaw of their faces in the classroom today! Lots of children explored putting the pieces back together and then were excited to discover we had been left a present in very special wrapping paper. We are starting this term with the key text 'It's Okay to Be Different' by Todd Parr - exploring and celebrating the ways we are diverse, unique and special. We read through the story and will dive more into the messages in the book over the term as part of our Autumn 2 topic, 'Little People, Big Dreams.'
Owls had their book hook today. They searched through the sand to discover hidden objects, images and words. They then made some interesting predictions. We can't wait to find out what happens!
We have had a really busy first few weeks back in Fledglings! A visit from Thames Valley Police and 2 police dogs in our first week, followed by a WOW Forest School Afternoon in Week 2!
We have welcomed lots of new faces into the classroom and our new Fledglings are doing a fantastic job of picking up our school routines and expectations. Last year's children have really stepped up to show our new friends how to be 'Fantastic Fledglings' too, which is lovely to see. We have been busy exploring our indoor and outdoor classrooms every day. You can see some of our learning in the photos below! World Book day was a joyful celebration at St Mary's. Fledglings enjoyed a book scavenger hunt, the Pupil Leadership team ran a book swap at lunchtime and we shared lots of stories! Enjoy spending your book voucher. Fledglings were able to share a special reading worship with Year 6 this week. The Owls came down to EYFS and shared books with one or two Fledglings each. It was lovely to see the oldest children at St. Mary's looking after the youngest and enjoying a wide range of texts. The discussions ranged from different types of birds to LEGO Star Wars and everything in between!
We had a very exciting day on Tuesday when Badminton champion Jordan Hart came to visit us in school. Earlier in the day, we talked in the classroom about what an athlete is and all the sports we could think of. We then went to a whole school worship where Jordan played us some video clips of her matches and told us how she became an athlete. We were then able to do an exercise workshop with her where we explored moving our bodies in different ways. It was lots of fun! |
