In Year 2, we have finished our 'properties of shapes' unit this week and we have loved exploring different 2D and 3D shapes. Not only have we learned the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and their names but we also discovered what shape faces, sides, edges and vertices are.
One of favourite lessons, was one in which we build 3D shapes with colourful counting sticks and Blu Tack. The Blu Tack helped us count the different vertices that a 3D shape may have. Have a look!

Fledglings took on a special challenge today! They had 10 minutes to set up an obstacle course between two points in the garden before the floor turned to lava! There was lots of fantastic teamwork as everyone worked together to make a safe path through the lava using tyres, crates and wooden blocks.
Some children even extended the trail further to the stage, which was really tricky as there weren't many resources left to use. After all that work avoiding lava, we enjoyed a well-earned snack. This week saw the Kingfishers preparing for their celebration worship. We worked especially hard learning all of our lines and movements as we created a brand new play for the occasion; we were so glad that so many of our grown ups were able to join us.
On top of our preparations, we also explored different ways of making the numbers 11, 12 and 13; used numicon to help us complete some part whole models and painted patterns with the correct number of squares. The Robins in Year 2 have been working incredible hard for the last two weeks learning to play the recorder. So far we’ve already mastered the B and A note. We will be building up our skills to play the song 'Candle in the Dark', inspired by our theme this term 'Light Celebrations'.
What an amazing start to 2024 we've had in Owls. We started reading a new book and were enthralled as we listened to the events unfold. The children were so passionate about their learning that they organised their learning themselves and worked as a team to set up and host a debate based on one key moment in the text that they couldn't agree on - speak to the children if you want to know more! We have also been considering what is is right to be judged on and what it is wrong to be judged on. This led to a brilliant discussion where we concluded it was important to get to know a person's character before making any judgements about them.
Fledglings have had a marvellous first week back! Our new topic, 'Once Upon a Time' will see us exploring fairy tales and traditional stories. We have started with Jack and the Beanstalk and the children have enjoyed a range of activities from maths using beans, creating puppets of the characters and exploring our very own castle in the classroom!
With last week's cold weather, we were also able to explore lots of ice in the garden, finding ways to smash and melt it, as well as using it as an ingredient in some magic potions! On a couple of days, we left objects out in water to see if they would freeze overnight and if they did, we worked to set them free! Kingfishers have made a very enthusiastic start the term, and have been exploring the theme of Once Upon a Time: Dragons Knights and Castles.
A drawing relay helped us learn about what a castle looks like and what the various parts are called and resulted in some wonderful artwork. After starting this term's book, The Knight and the Dragon, we have been busy writing forming sentences that will tell other knights how to fight those naughty dragons - in addition to this we've also been getting our toys ready for battle by making armour for them. In Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes; as well as learning about the properties of squares, rectangles, circles and triangles we have been spotting them around our school. In Year 2, this week we had our computing day and we loved it! We explored the core skills needed to take 'expert' photos on different devices. We discussed the importance of lighting, object placement, focus, and whether a picture is best taken in a landscape or portrait format. We also discussed the importance of knowing that we may sometimes come across 'fake' or 'edited' pictures which do not always represent the truth. Have a look at the different type of photos we took during our computing day! Another fabulous couple of weeks in Fledglings! We have been exploring the seasonal change from autumn to winter with lots of winter and snow themed activities around the classroom and outdoor area. This week, we also took part in the school's Santa Fun Run, which meant our monthly class photo took on a festive twist with Santa hats! We have been looking at each new month's photo and spotting the changes in ourselves, our clothes and the environment around us.Another busy week for Kingfishers as we discovered that iPads can be used for computing, art and science. Once we had learned the basic functions of our iPads, we found out how to take a selfie; how to annotate our selfies and name the parts of our faces; how to have fun with the paint tools and make ourselves look very different indeed. It was so much fun even Mr Moreby had a go!
