Poetry CollectionHere is a collection of some of the children in Goldcrests and Skylarks reading their poems about the rivers.
They worked really hard to collect rich and varied vocabulary that described the journey of a river in different and exciting ways. All the children then published their poems and they look amazing! We are hoping to get them printed as a poetry book! |
Welcome to Goldcrests
Although a Goldcrest is the smallest bird in the UK, they have a lot of character - just like us! We are an amazing flock of beautiful birds learning, growing and transforming together.
In year 4, we love discovering new things and working in different ways to help us achieve our potential. Our learning journey this year begins with a topic call 'Trash to treasure' where we will look at the value of recycling. Next, we are going to be learning about how the life of a child has changed since the Victorian times. During the Spring term, our focus is geography and we will be completing a comparative study between the UK and Canada. Our final topics centre around the theatre and the Commonwealth games which take place in summer 2022.

In Goldcrests, we think about our learning behaviour and consider our choices carefully. We learn from our mistakes and support each other. We collect house points and marbles when we demonstrate our school values and together we have chosen our 2021 -2022 marble rewards:

Our teacher - Mrs SmithI am thrilled to be teaching year 4 again this year. I am an energetic and outgoing teacher who loves to laugh! I have been teaching for 10 years and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I am sporty and I love spending time outside enjoying the fresh air. I live with my husband, our little boy, our pet hamster called Ronnie and our cat called Milo. |

Spring 2: Across the Atlantic
We will be continuing our geography focus into Spring 2 but this time we will be comparing Canada and the UK. A huge part of this project will focus on children learning about and from maps. They will begin by learning about where Canada and UK are on a world map using key words to describe their positions. Next, they will use different types of maps to help them make comparisons linked to their physical and human geography.
Our WOW starter for this term is a trip to Oxford to get a feel for what it is like, visit key buildings and, most importantly, discover the grotesques which can be found all over the city. Whilst on our walking tour, we will sketch sketch ones that interest us and then back at school, we will learn about techniques they could use before planning their own. Once the children have finished sculpting their grotesques out of clay, they will spend time evaluating them.
Our first piece of writing as part of our learning in English for this term will be a recount about their visit to Oxford. They will be developing their use of conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions to express time as well as recapping the use of apostrophes for possession and contraction. Children will also look at how they are going to organise their ideas into paragraphs.
The second piece of writing the children will be completing focuses on using persuasive techniques. Previously they have developed this skill through formal letters but now they are going to write travel brochures persuading people to visit Vancouver. This will allow them to make further comparisons between the UK and Canada. As part of this writing, they will be developing their use of speech punctuation and pronouns.

To support our learning in both English and geography, we will be using two books written by the author Anita Ganeri. They are both in the series 'A Benjamin Blog and his Inquisitive Dog Guide' with one focusing on the UK and one on Canada. They are written informally with sections mimicking a blog so are slightly different to the other non-fiction books we read last term.
We will also be using a range of other fiction and non-fiction texts to support our learning. Are there any other books that you could recommend?

Our class bookWe are nearly finished reading our class book - only a few chapters to go. It is call 'The Boy who Grew Dragons' and it was written by Andy Shepherd. I wonder what we'll be reading next!
