English

Picture
At St Mary’s, we aim to promote high standards of language and literacy by utilising a cross curricular approach, where appropriate, to make connections in learning across the curriculum.   When we ask readers to make sense of text, we are asking them to be part of a cognitively hard process that needs to utilise background knowledge (Tennent et al 2016).  By linking our learning in English to the wider curriculum we aim to address the gaps in background knowledge thus enabling children to make sense of the text and the world we inhabit.

We also place great emphasis on building solid vocabulary foundations as we believe that developing a love of our language in our children is vital in achieving success at school and later in life.

You can click on each Button to find out more about how we learn each aspect of English.
