The children cooked chocolate brownies this week. There was lots of opportunities for maths and literacy as they followed the recipe and weighed out the ingredients.
We explored Clay in the classroom this week, developing our fine motor skills and language. We looked at physical changes as we investigated what happened when we added water to the clay, and watched as it dried out too. “it go hard”. “It’s all slimy when there is water on it”. “I like it on my hands, it’s so smooth”

We used UV colour changing beads to make bracelets and necklaces. It was fascinating watching the beads change colour when we took them into the sunlight. You can see how engaged we were.
We also enjoyed using the hoover in the classroom. We love exploring technology and asked Miss Prud’homme if she could find other things for us to try. We enjoyed looking at the magazines in the reading area, spotting words and characters that we know. We investigated bubbles in the water trays, adding washing up liquid and glycerol. The results were amazing!
“The bubbles are always round and you can see lots of colours when you look at them”. “You had to shake the hoop to make sure that all the water went over it or it didn’t work”. “You have to move slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly or it will go …. |POP!”. This week we have been developing our fine motor skills by using different tools. We thought about what we would need to do to help ourselves and our friends stay safe. We were ‘fantastic fledglings’, listening carefully, following instructions and looking out for our friends. We discovered that drilling wood is really hard work, but we persevered and were really happy with the results!
We continue to investigate the stencils in the message centre and using the name book to write letters to our friends. We have enjoyed using shapes to make patterns and build models, and have been really excited to see what we can make with the magnetic shapes. Inside we have enjoyed investigating numbers. We explored dominoes and were very engaged sorting them, counting the dots and matching numbers. We also used scales to weigh ingredients when we made scones. We have been sharing books with each other and discovered the stencils in the message centre. Miss Prud’homme introduced us to window pens and we have had great fun decorating the windows and then washing them for her. We acted out the story of Little Red Riding Hood and really enjoyed dressing up as the characters. We are really proud of how well the children in Fledgling class have settled into school. This week we have been exploring our new classroom, both indoors and out, showing how independent we can be and making new friends. We have been enjoying climbing trees and experimenting capacity in the mud kitchen! |
