Welcome to Swallows

We are an amazing flock of beautiful birds learning, growing and transforming together. In year 4, we love discovering new things and working in different ways to help us achieve our potential. Our learning journey this year begins with a whole school topic called 'United' with a focus on the geography of the United Kingdom and exploring our differences. Next, we will be soaring to Brazil where we will be discovering about the amazing journey taken by Ed Stafford, the first human ever to walk the length of the Amazon river. Then we will be time travelling back to the Stone Age before getting musical with our topic called 'Playlist'. After this, we will be ending our journey with a whole school topic titled 'Creation'.
In Swallows, we think about our learning behaviour and consider our choices carefully. We learn from our mistakes and support each other.  We collect house points and marbles when we demonstrate our school values and together we have chosen our 2020 -2021 marble rewards:
150
300
450
600
15 minutes of game time
Hot chocolate
1 hour of play together on the field
Film time!

Our teacher - Mrs Smith

I am thrilled to be teaching year 4 this year. I am an energetic and outgoing teacher who loves to laugh! I have been teaching for 10 years and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I am sporty and I love spending time outside enjoying the fresh air. I live with my husband, my little boy, our pet hamster called Ronnie and our new kitten called Milo.
We look forward to sharing our learning with you so come back to this page to find our home learning, photos and other exciting news throughout the year.

Summer 1: PLAYLIST

This term is focused around the joy of music! We will be listening to music from different traditions every day and considering whether we like them, how they make us feel, what instruments are used and describe it using some musical vocabulary. We will also be learning about the history of music and how it has changed over time. This will include considering how instruments have changed and also how the purpose of music has changed.

In science, our focus is sound which we are going to explore through music. We are going to start by understanding how a sound is made by using instruments and then we will think about how the sound travels to the ear. Next, we will investigate how well sound travels through different materials. We will explore how pitch and loudness of a sound changes the sound wave. Throughout the topic, we will be making careful observations and using these to draw conclusions about sound.

To help develop our DT skills, the children are going to be making their own ear defenders. This will involve collecting ideas, creating annotated sketches, adapting their designs based on feedback and research, making their chosen design and evaluating them based on their original design brief.

During this topic, we are going to take inspiration from the book ‘The Bear and the Piano’ to help us with our learning in English. We are all going to start by exploring the story through drama and retelling activities. Then we are going to be changing the audience of the text by expanding events and turning it into a chapter book.

We will also use a range of other fiction and non-fiction texts to support our learning. Here are a few of them:
