The Ickabog by J.K. Rowling

Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing with you the story of The Ickabog. I know that lots of you love Harry Potter, and Santa did give us this story for Christmas, so I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I am enjoying reading it.

Welcome to Swallows

We are an amazing flock of beautiful birds learning, growing and transforming together. In year 4, we love discovering new things and working in different ways to help us achieve our potential. Our learning journey this year begins with a whole school topic called 'United' with a focus on the geography of the United Kingdom and exploring our differences. Next, we will be soaring to Brazil where we will be discovering about the amazing journey taken by Ed Stafford, the first human ever to walk the length of the Amazon river. Then we will be time travelling back to the Stone Age before getting musical with our topic called 'Playlist'. After this, we will be exploring fabrics and the craft of sewing before ending our journey with a whole school topic titled 'Creation'.
In Swallows, we think about our learning behaviour and consider our choices carefully. We learn from our mistakes and support each other.  We collect house points and marbles when we demonstrate our school values and together we have chosen our 2020 -2021 marble rewards:
150
300
450
600
5 songs on Alexa
30 minutes of game time in the classroom
1 hour of play together on the field
Film time!

Our teacher - Mrs Smith

I am thrilled to be teaching year 4 this year. I am an energetic and outgoing teacher who loves to laugh! I have been teaching for 10 years and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I am sporty and I love spending time outside enjoying the fresh air. I live with my husband, my little boy, our pet hamster called Ronnie and our new kitten called Milo.
We look forward to sharing our learning with you so come back to this page to find our home learning, photos and other exciting news throughout the term.

Autumn 2

Our project for this term incorporates geography and science.

This term we will be walking in the footsteps of the British explorer Ed Stafford who was the first person to walk the length of the Amazon river.

To build on our knowledge and understanding in geography from last term, we will be locating the Amazon on a map of the world and looking at the countries it spans. We will use the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn to help us explain why we get rainforests and then explore their climate. We will also use maps to help us see how the Amazon rainforest has changed over time and link this to  deforestation.

In Science, we will be exploring the different types of plants found in the Amazon rainforest and looking at how they are different based on the different layers of the rainforest that they are found. We will then look at how the plants have adapted to the climate. Finally, we will look at the life cycles of plants and have a look at the different ways that seeds are dispersed.

To help children understand the effects of deforestation, we have chosen to focus on the book called 'The Great Kapok Tree' by Lynne Cherry. It talks about the issue through the eyes of the animals that call the rainforest their home.
We will also use a range of non-fiction texts to support our learning. Here are a few of them (one includes Mrs Luita's dog called Harry!):
