To begin our Move it project, Year 3 and 4 were challenged to create the slowest marble run! Teams of 5 were given a copier box lid and had to explore different surfaces to slow the marble down. They had a budget to ‘buy’ tape, card, newspaper, lolly sticks and surfaces.

This week has been a change around for Swifts with 2 new teachers, who are already familiar to the children; Mrs Thom and Miss Prud’homme and a whole new PSHCE project, Staying Safe Online. As part of our SCIB (Safeguarding Children in Banbury), we have talked about the pressures of social media and how positive images and concepts can be reinforced through social media and magazine. As well as thinking about how and when we should take responsibility for our actions when online.
To honour a Shrove Tuesday tradition, we joined the whole school outside for the annual pancake races, organised superbly by the Y6 leadership team and the support of others. There was some fantastic flipping of pancakes as we all raced up and down! Look at the photos to see how much we enjoyed it! In Maths, we have recapped addition from last term and reviewed our understanding of money by investigating the different ways to total £2 and £1. We also welcomed Mr Wakefield back to continue our musical exploration into Blues music, working towards creating our own lyrics next week to our very own Blues riff. This week has been our second SCiB (Safeguarding Children in Banbury) week of the year and the focus has been on being safe online. We started by revaluating our Early Warning Signs and creating a risk assessment flow chart with some clear strategies to use when we feel them and know we need to take action. We have also investigated risks linked with some popular apps. In maths, we have focused on arithmetic with some of the children recapping formal written methods addition and multiplication. Some children have moved on to calculating with fractions and applying this to reasoning questions. On Monday, we performed our Class Worship to parents, grandparents and friends with everyone enjoying our performance. You can see the photos from this term’s RE project here (hyperlink to powerpoint) which we shared in the Worship. Both Miss Gascoigne and Mrs Thom were so proud of all of the children who had learnt their individual lines, learnt the poem, Keeping Christmas and the song Hey Ewe as well as their confident and loud performance in front of a packed hall. On Tuesday, we enjoyed our Christmas lunch with our homemade Christmas hats and placemats. In the afternoon, we had great fun at our very own Y2 Christmas Party, playing Sleeping Reindeers, Musical reindeer bumps and Santa says! You might want to play these games at home over the holidays. We also discovered some magical footprints that belonged to Father Christmas! He came with a sack full of presents for us and we were so excited to see him. Wednesday was another fun packed day with everyone dressed up, ready for our whole school performance in the Church in the afternoon. We must have been a very funny sight walking through banbury with staff and children dressed as Nativity characters!! We all enjoyed singing our Christmas songs in Church with our family and friends watching us and helping us to say our goodbyes to Mr Tolmie. It has been a fabulous term and we are looking forward to a new year, full of fun and learning in 2020! The children have enjoyed some Christmas games on the Ipads too...have a look at home if you have time. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/christmas/ChristmasGames.aspx |
