The last fortnight has been a whirlwind of discovery in the Kingfisher's classroom. We've been diving deep into the fascinating world of numbers, specifically those between 10 and 50 and finding out how they are made up of 10s and 1s. But numbers weren't the only things keeping us busy. We embarked on a fitness adventure inspired by out visit to the Cotswold Wildlife Park! Our PE lessons were transformed into a jungle gym as we crab walked, bear crawled and even attempted some graceful(ish) bird poses. The laughter and energy were contagious, and it was a fantastic way to explore movement and coordination. Speaking of inspiration, we were lucky enough to have a visit from a real life champion - Laurence Whiteley, the paralympian rower! Laurence shared his incredible story of determination and perseverance, proving that anything is possible with hard work and a positive attitude. The children were captivated by his stories and left inspired to follow their dreams. Stay tuned for our next adventure - who knows what exciting discoveries await.

What a week in year 6! We are only just over two weeks into the term and we have already managed to do lots of amazing learning: a formal letter and a memoir in English, learning about ratio and area and perimeter in maths, discovering facts about space in science and brushing up on their skills in reading.
We have also been developing our skills in cricket. This week, the focus was on batting and considering where we wanted the ball to go based on where the fielding team were placed. Check back for more next week! Friday was a very special day! it was the day of our trip to Cotswold Wildlife Park.
The Kingfishers showed their very best behaviour on the coach and in the park, and despite the less than ideal weather we all had a wonderful time. We saw a variety of birds of prey, Asiatic otters, lions, emus, wallabies, camels, meerkats, mongooses, giant tortoises, antelopes and rhinoceroses; we also saw my personal favourite, the giraffes, but the animal that was most popular with the Kingfishers (by a long, long way) was the penguins. Seeing all these animals up close not only gave us a great opportunity to learn about their lives and habitats, but it also gave us a lot of practice in classifying them. All our King fishers should now know that feathers and wings means that its bird; scales and a backbone means its a reptile; fur and four legs means that its a mammal. We're also looking forward to doing some amazing writing about our wonderful wildlife experience. Kingfishers have had an exciting opening to the term, developing our bodies, minds and eggs.
To develop our bodies we had a visit from a Tae Kwon Do expert. Not only did this provide us with an exciting change to our normal PE lessons, we also learned how to perform an Ap Jireugi (front punch) and an Ap Chagi (front kick)... we also promised not to do these on our friends, siblings and parents. In addition to this, we discussed how we can keep our bodies healthy. We learned that we need a balanced diet that includes carbohydrates for energy, dairy foods for strong bones and teeth, protein for muscle growth and fibre for healthy tummies. We gave our minds their regular work out in English and Maths, as well as learning how to protect them (and our gadgets) by staying safe on-line; we now know that if we see anything that we aren't sure of on-line we need to speak to a trusted adult. On Monday, we developed our understanding of eggs by looking at some that were,,, well.. odd. As well as using lots of interesting adjectives to describe the size, shape, colour and texture of each one, we also imagined what creatures may have laid them... even the ones that looked suspiciously like a passion fruit, mango and a melon. This week, the Robins and Starlings had their Science WOW day, where two volunteers from Hillier Garden Centre joined us for the day. We learned all about the different parts of a flower, the three basic needs of a plant and how to successfully plant an array of different seeds using soil, plant labels, garden dibbers, pots and of course seeds. We can't wait to watch our flowers grow and blossom over this term! Thank you so much Hillier Garden Centre for the amazing day! The Robins and Starlings loved it!
Kingfishers have continued exploring numbers between 10 and 20 this week. They have enjoyed counting out the correct number of multi-link cubes and turning them into robots, rockets and animals; used 10 sided dice to find missing numbers and practised writing their own number sentences.
In English we have written an account of of how what happened when the knight met the dragon and in history we have been pretending that we lived in a castle and acted out the different jobs that people had. In Year 2, we have finished our 'properties of shapes' unit this week and we have loved exploring different 2D and 3D shapes. Not only have we learned the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and their names but we also discovered what shape faces, sides, edges and vertices are.
One of favourite lessons, was one in which we build 3D shapes with colourful counting sticks and Blu Tack. The Blu Tack helped us count the different vertices that a 3D shape may have. Have a look! Fledglings took on a special challenge today! They had 10 minutes to set up an obstacle course between two points in the garden before the floor turned to lava! There was lots of fantastic teamwork as everyone worked together to make a safe path through the lava using tyres, crates and wooden blocks.
Some children even extended the trail further to the stage, which was really tricky as there weren't many resources left to use. After all that work avoiding lava, we enjoyed a well-earned snack. This week saw the Kingfishers preparing for their celebration worship. We worked especially hard learning all of our lines and movements as we created a brand new play for the occasion; we were so glad that so many of our grown ups were able to join us.
On top of our preparations, we also explored different ways of making the numbers 11, 12 and 13; used numicon to help us complete some part whole models and painted patterns with the correct number of squares. The Robins in Year 2 have been working incredible hard for the last two weeks learning to play the recorder. So far we’ve already mastered the B and A note. We will be building up our skills to play the song 'Candle in the Dark', inspired by our theme this term 'Light Celebrations'.
