Welcome to Kestrel class

By Marianna, Adelina and Eden
We are the courageous Kestrels that are super excited to be in year 5! Our team is Miss Rose, Mrs Thompson, Miss Higginbottom and Mr Critchley. Together we form Kestrels.
We are good friends to each other and support each other when our friends need us.
We love to spend time together, especially during our class story time. We have just read The Boy at the Back of the class and now we are reading Letters from the Lighthouse.
I hope you enjoyed our introduction to our amazing journey but keep in mind this is only the beginning....

Autumn 2 Espionage

Our project for this term incorporates history, computing, PSHE and RE.

This history aspect provides children with the opportunity to look at the Second World War as an aspect of British history that extends pupils’ chronological knowledge beyond 1066.
We will look at the causes and impact of WW2 through a range of enquiries.  The enquiries will help children make sense of historical terms and of the events that took place in Europe during the period as well as looking at the impact of the war on Banbury.
 The enquiries are;
Enquiry 1: How significant was the Blitz? Enquiry 2: World War II: whose war? Enquiry 3: What was the impact of World War II on people in our locality?
Enquiry 4: How well does a fictional story tell us what it was like to be an evacuee? Enquiry 5: Evacuee experiences in Britain: is this all we need to know about children in World War II?
Enquiry 6: What did men do in World War II? Did all men have to fight?

In RE, we will be be learning  how to make  links between the narrative of the resurrection and Christian beliefs about life after death and the significance of the resurrection for  understanding the nature of Jesus. We will learn how a Christian understanding of the resurrection might influence the way that Christians respond to death. We will be able to explain why many Christians believe that Jesus resurrection is important.  We will compare how different faiths prepare their loved ones for death and what they believe comes next.
The computing element of the project looks at coding.  To develop coding skills, children will have the opportunity to explore program design and put computational thinking into practice.

This term we will launch Commando Joe’s.  This is a new programme that develops character.  The new scheme focuses on the following characteristics;
Resilience
Empathy
Self Awareness
Positivity
Excellence
Communication
Teamwork

You will hear the children talk about missions and there will be a new award for commandos who are trying hard to show these characteristics.  The focus of our missions this term is Nancy Wake. Nancy was a British Special Operations Executive agent who served during World War Two, becoming a leading figure of the Marquis group of the French Resistance and was one of the Allies’ most decorated servicewomen of the war.

English;  As part of our topic Espionage, children will study the books Anne Frank and Goodnight Mister Tom  to understand the  effects of war from the view of a child.  Children will learn about the contrasting experiences and the profound impact the war had on their lives . As these texts explore the emotional turmoil these children experienced, our writing will be heavily centered around conveying tone.

As part of of historical enquiry into evacuation, we will look at how fiction portrays  life as an evacuee.

In Guided reading we will be looking at a range of both fiction and non-fiction texts and develop both our retrieval and inference skills.
