Welcome to Swallows

We are an amazing flock of beautiful birds learning, growing and transforming together. In year 4, we love discovering new things and working in different ways to help us achieve our potential. Our learning journey this year begins with a whole school topic called 'United' with a focus on the geography of the United Kingdom and exploring our differences. Next, we will be soaring to Brazil where we will be discovering about the amazing journey taken by Ed Stafford, the first human ever to walk the length of the Amazon river. Then we will be time travelling back to the Stone Age before getting musical with our topic called 'Playlist'. After this, we will be ending our journey with a whole school topic titled 'Creation'.
In Swallows, we think about our learning behaviour and consider our choices carefully. We learn from our mistakes and support each other.  We collect house points and marbles when we demonstrate our school values and together we have chosen our 2020 -2021 marble rewards:
150
300
450
600
15 minutes of game time
Hot chocolate
1 hour of play together on the field
Film time!

Our teacher - Mrs Smith

I am thrilled to be teaching year 4 this year. I am an energetic and outgoing teacher who loves to laugh! I have been teaching for 10 years and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I am sporty and I love spending time outside enjoying the fresh air. I live with my husband, my little boy, our pet hamster called Ronnie and our new kitten called Milo.
We look forward to sharing our learning with you so come back to this page to find our home learning, photos and other exciting news throughout the year.

Summer 2: Creation

This term, our focus is the wonderful world around us! We will be using this theme to inspire our learning in RE, art and science.

In RE, we will focus on the Christian creation story as recorded in the Bible (Genesis1:1-25) and how this leads Christian’s to believe that God is the creator and to feel responsible for looking after the beautiful world around them.  We will look at examples of the different ways that Christian's care for the world and explore why non-Christian's would want to protect the environment.

To continue the theme of our wonderful world, we are going to be exploring landscape paintings as part of our learning in art. Children are going to begin by looking at lots of different examples of landscape painting from around the world and consider how it makes them feel and which they prefer and why. Children will then explore colour mixing before learning about how Monnet uses colour in his landscape paintings to create different effects. Children will then use this understanding to help them compose their own landscape painting with a specific focus on using colour to convey different emotions.

In science, we are going to continue exploring the world around us specifically looking at animals that live in our world. Children will begin by exploring the classification of living things including recapping the seven life processes. Next, children will begin to understand and use classification keys to help them group and identify different living things.  Then children will learn the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates.  Finally, they will identify possible dangers to the local and wider wildlife and some things that can be done to help.

During this project, we are going to take inspiration from the book ‘The Tin Forest’ to help us with our learning in English. We are all going to start by writing persuasive leaflets about recycling before exploring the the main character and writing a letter to him to help cheer him up. We are then going to follow the journey he goes on as he begins clearing up the rubbish around his little house and use this as the basis of a diary entry. Finally, we are going to imagine that we have had the opportunity to stay in The Tin Forest and write a Trip advisor review of our time there.

We will also use a range of other fiction and non-fiction texts to support our learning. Here are a few of them:
