Welcome to Kingfishers

We are a kind and inquisitive group of year 1 children, who love to be busy investigating and learning a variety of new things! We regularly discuss and emulate the behaviours of being a ‘kind kingfisher’; which links to our school values.

Our learning this year will include our whole school project of ‘United’, where we will discover and explore how we can make a difference to the world we live in by coming together.

Our other projects this year include, ‘what’s the problem’; where we use Tales Toolkit to explore different stories, as well as looking at letter writing; focusing on punctuation. We also fill focus on science, DT and computing in our project ‘what’s the solution?’ inspecting and investigating our computing programme ‘Purple Mash’.

Here in Kingfishers at St Mary’s, we strive hand in hand to thrive and be independent, curious learners – come back to see what we’ve been discovering!

Our Teacher:  Miss Bullard

I am delighted to be teaching in Kingfisher class this year and working closely with all the children and adults in Early Years and Key Stage 1. I feel very happy to be working in a school and with a team of staff that highly values creativity and supporting children to explore a range of opportunities.
I completed my degree in Education and my PGCE, specialising in Art at Bath Spa University. I love being creative and ensuring that all children are able to access learning. I am excited to develop my skills this year as part of the Early Years team and exploring new ways to support children in all areas of learning.

I am so excited about our project ‘Mix it Up’, as I love art and using my imagination. I am also particularly excited about our ‘Blood and guts’ project because I love experiments and exploring all things science.

In my spare time I enjoy travelling and exploring new places. One of my favourite places that I have visited is Rome. I love cooking and being creative in the kitchen. Recently, I experimented with courgette and blueberry cupcakes and they are definitely my new favourite bake! I also enjoy football and last year achieved my FA Level 1 in football coaching.

One of my favourite books is ‘Tree: Seasons Come and Seasons Go’ by Patricia Hegarty because I love the beautiful illustrations and love all things  related to weather and seasons.

Our Approach to Year 1

From the very start of their St Marys School journey, our children show us that play is our brain’s favourite way of learning, which is why it’s the centre of our EYFS and KS1 curriculum. We believe that continuous provision helps independent, inquisitive and motivated learners to flourish by meeting the language, social, emotional and physical needs of our children.

Continuous provision at St Mary's enables children from all backgrounds to have the same opportunities, providing a rich variety of practical experiences. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for extending and practicing what they have been learning and complete challenges which are designed to foster and ignite their curiosity.

Children are taught to use life-long skills such as perseverance, problem solving and responsibility in their day to day routine and plan their own learning enquiries. The flexibility and ownership that children have of their learning means that opportunities can be easily adapted to meet the specific needs of each individual child – no matter what their starting point.

Phonics

Phonics is taught daily in a group that is working on a specific set of sounds according to the ability of the child. Each session has a distinct structure and utilises Read Write Inc (RWI) and Letters and Sounds.  The children take home a RWI book each week to re-read and develop fluency.

Phonics support continues for as long as a child requires it.

Creation, Summer 2 Project

This term our whole school project is Creation. This project will focus predominantly on the areas of Science, RE and Art.  We will be asking the question ‘Who made the World?’ . To help us answer this question, we will look at the story of ‘Creation’. One of our key texts is ‘In the Beginning’ by Jane Ray. This beautifully illustrated text encourages children to think about the diversity of the natural world and how Christians believe it was created.

In Science we will focus in on Plants. We will be investigating what plants need to grow and thrive, the different parts of plants,  as well as looking at plant life cycles. We will be identifying various different plants and trees and even growing some plants of our own!  Our Key Texts are ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen and our second book is ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle.

Our linked Texts will be ‘Wonderful Earth’ by Nick Butterworth, a different presentation of the Creation Story and ‘Katie and the Sunflowers' by James Mayhew? We will also look at ‘The Last Wolf’ by Mini Grey which encourages us to reflect on the importance of caring for God’s world.

In Art we will be building on different drawing and painting techniques to represent to natural world. Using Van Gogh’s Sunflowers as inspiration.
