Welcome to Cuckoo Class!

In Y2, we are a friendly, caring class, who are keen to welcome new learners and make them feel at home in our classroom. We enjoy working and playing together and you will often find us learning together outside. Cuckoos are curious learners who like to find out about the world in which we live and generate questions for our projects. We like being active learners by exploring new ideas and shared experiences. At the moment we are interested in the flags of all the countries that are represented by members of our class.

We love listening to stories of all kinds and are keen to choose books from the class library to share at home. Our class project books are already well thumbed!

Our teacher is Miss Gascoigne, who loves investigative learning and good quality picture books.

Miss Gascoigne has a degree in English Literature and a P.G.C.E from Bangor University. She has taught in London, Paris and Eton as well as several schools in Oxfordshire. She has taught all ages from Nursery to Year Seven and has coordinated a wide range of subjects across the curriculum. She enjoys reading stories aloud more than just about anything else! She is very happy to be teaching full time in Year Two.

Creation, Summer 2 Project

This term our whole school project is Creation. This project will focus predominantly on the areas of Science, RE and Art.  We will be asking the question ‘Who made the World?’ . To help us answer this question, we will look at the story of ‘Creation’. One of our key texts is ‘In the Beginning’ by Jane Ray. This beautifully illustrated text encourages children to think about the diversity of the natural world and how Christians believe it was created.

In Science we will focus in on Plants. We will be investigating what plants need to grow and thrive, the different parts of plants,  as well as looking at plant life cycles. We will be identifying various different plants and trees and even growing some plants of our own!  Our Key Texts are ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen and our second book is ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle.

Our linked Texts will be ‘Wonderful Earth’ by Nick Butterworth, a different presentation of the Creation Story and ‘Katie and the Sunflowers' by James Mayhew? We will also look at ‘The Last Wolf’ by Mini Grey which encourages us to reflect on the importance of caring for God’s world.

In Art we will be building on different drawing and painting techniques to represent to natural world. Using Van Gogh’s Sunflowers as inspiration.
